Snowbirds in Vallarta - Part I

Puerto Vallarta claims many loyal visitors for itself, and usually hooks them quickly. They return again and again to experience Vallarta’s world class restaurants, art galleries, museums, movie theaters, clubs, recreational activities and charitable pursuits. They build friendships, become vital parts of civic organizations, and discover hobbies. Then they leave because an important part of their life lies elsewhere.
Whether for reasons of career or family, or simply the weather, some people choose to come and go. Although not as simple as maintaining one residence, snowbirding offers the best of two or more worlds.
When we first retired, we considered making our permanent home in Vallarta. Our major adventure was buying a sailboat and learning to sail on Banderas Bay, one of the world’s best. It was fun hanging out on the docks, talking to people who had been living on their boats for years. It was exciting to take friends out on the water and show off our new skills. And, yes, one of the happiest days was the day we sold the boat.
A favorite pastime is spending a peaceful evening at one of the several beach front restaurants on Playa Los Muertos. There’s nothing better than watching one of the local bands play while sipping coffee as the stars shine overhead and waves gently break in the back ground.
However, during the first summer we spent in Vallarta, aside from missing family, the humidity overwhelmed us. We took long road trips to visit friends in dryer destinations. I guess we turned into “monsoon” birds.
