Pita Loca, a New Kosher Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta
Author: Jacqui Birchall
Welcome to the very new kosher restaurant, Pita Loca, located on the corner of Insurgentes and Aquiles Serdan in Colonia Emiliano Zapata.
Owned and operated by the very charming Avi and Linda Azouly, this young Israeli American couple prepares all the food in their nearby kosher home. Avi learned how to cook from his Moroccan/Israeli parents.
They serve 30 different, mouthwatering Moroccan/Israeli salads traditionally served on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. All are homemade, all delicious. Even the pita is homemade, made from the recipe of his mom’s close friend. Avi and Linda serve two hot meals daily, plus shawarma, falafel, baba ganoush, hummus, tahini and a couscous dish.
On Shabbat they serve a special meal such as Moroccan style fish, yellow fin tuna with olives and Israeli paprika. All the herbs and spices are Israeli to preserve that certain taste. Meals are priced between $40 and $70 pesos. Everything is available for takeout and delivery.
Avi asks if you remember sambosas? Any Israeli pastries can be made to order. Avi will make anything if you give him enough notice.
On Fridays, Avi is only open until 6:30pm, when Shabbat begins and he is closed until Saturday evening when the three stars, Jacob, Abraham and Isaac appear. Avi’s beliefs prevent him from accepting money on Fridays; you need to pay for the food on Sundays.
Avi plans to be open from 9am until 9pm except on Shabbat, but in these early days look for him around noon. He sells out every day!
Hebrew, English and Spanish are spoken in this charming not to be missed kosher restaurant. Israeli Arak is available!
