What to Do in Puerto Vallarta: The Best Experiences Without Spending a Dime

Puerto Vallarta is a travel destination that caters to a wide range of travelers and budgets, offering memorable experiences for all. However, one of the most appealing features of the city is that many of its most memorable experiences are completely free.

There are countless ways to enjoy Jalisco’s premier beach destination without spending a dime. Puerto Vallarta offers a wide variety of free attractions, including historic sites, jungle hikes, oceanfront strolls, and urban art tours.

No matter if you're looking for budget-friendly travel or simply want to experience the destination's most authentic side, here are the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta, no matter the season, without spending a single dime.

Stroll Along the Malecon

Puerto Vallarta's Malecon boardwalk is the cultural and social heart of the city. This pedestrian promenade, which faces the Pacific, is a favorite activity for both travelers and locals alike. People like to stroll along it, day or night.

El Malecon is home to iconic sculptures, street performers, musicians, bars and restaurants, art galleries, and countless shopping options. Puerto Vallarta's everyday landscape is defined by the presence of several emblematic works of art, including The Boy on the Seahorse, Nostalgia, and The Sea Roundabout. These art pieces have become true symbols of the city and are a part of its daily scenery.

At sunset, El Malecon comes alive. The Mexican coast is graced by one of the most photographed natural spectacles as the sun disappears over the Pacific horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and violet. Trust us: you won't want to miss this.

Visit the Parish Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Right in the heart of Puerto Vallarta's historic center is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the city's most iconic buildings.  The construction of the church began in the early 20th century, and over time, it has become an architectural symbol of Puerto Vallarta.

The city's skyline is defined by its distinctive crown, which is located on the main tower.  According to local lore, this crown was inspired by Empress Carlota's own crown.  The church's role in the local culture is significant, beyond its religious importance.

Each December, the downtown streets are filled with music, dancing, and celebrations for twelve consecutive days as part of the traditional pilgrimages in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe's architecture is worth admiring even when the dates don't align with major celebrations. Immersing yourself in the spiritual history of Jalisco’s premier beach destination is a worthwhile endeavor.

Practice Your Photographic Skills on the Street Art Route

Puerto Vallarta is also a destination for lovers of urban art. Numerous murals in the streets of El Centro, 5 de Diciembre, and the Romantic Zone illustrate the community, local culture, and the natural environment.

ROMPE, a collective of female artists, is one of the most well-known projects. It aims to transform and revitalize public spaces through art. The artists involved are both local and national, as well as international.

A "photographic tour" is the best way to describe the experience of wandering the cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta in search of these works. Each mural offers a unique experience, featuring vibrant colors, traditional characters, marine animals, or everyday scenes from the city.

In addition to being a free activity, it's an interesting way to discover neighborhoods —such as 5 de Diciembre (aka 5D), Emiliano Zapata, and El Remance— that many visitors overlook.

Take a Guided Tour of the El Salado State Park

The protected natural area that is El Salado Estuary State Park is located just a few minutes from the Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta.

This park is home to one of the region's most important mangrove ecosystems.  Birds, reptiles, fish, and various tropical wetland species all call the estuary home.  The promotion of the conservation of the area and the ecological importance of mangroves is achieved by El Salado State Park through the organization of educational guided tours.

During the tour, you can spot crocodiles, herons, iguanas, and other species that inhabit this natural environment within the city, making it an ideal activity for families with children.

The availability of free tours is subject to variation depending on educational programs or conservation initiatives. For more information, email [email protected] or visit Facebook at: Estero El Salado.

Listen to the City’s Brass Band at Sunset

The people of Vallarta are very fond of one of their cultural traditions: listening to the Municipal Brass Band play at sunset.

The musicians of the band perform at the bandstand in the main square, located across from the Parish Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, every Thursday and Sunday at 6:00 pm.

Traditional Mexican music, danzones, boleros, and popular tunes are all typically included in the repertoire.  The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly: people sitting on benches, couples dancing spontaneously, and visitors enjoying the sound of the brass instruments as the evening falls.

Since 1981, these performances have been a part of Puerto Vallarta's community spirit and offer a simple way to connect with the city's daily life.

Hiking Trail: Boca de Tomatlán to Colomitos

Those seeking nature and adventure without spending money will find one of the most popular trails in the South Zone of Puerto Vallarta is the hike from Boca de Tomatlán to Colomitos.

The trail runs along the southern coast, through small hills covered in tropical rainforest. The views of the Pacific Ocean are breathtaking. Along the way, you'll encounter natural lookouts, secluded hidden beaches, and one of the most romantic restaurants in Puerto Vallarta.

The hike is usually completed in about an hour, depending on your pace and condition. The trail ends at Colomitos Beach, which is known for its clear water and small size, making it one of the most photogenic beaches in the region (you can follow the trail by the coast up to Las Animas Beach.)

It is advisable to come prepared with water, wear comfortable footwear, and show respect for the natural surroundings.

Stroll Through the Streets of Gringo Gulch

In the heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta lies a vibrant neighborhood called Gringo Gulch, a place that's absolutely bursting with picture-perfect spots and Instagram-worthy moments.

Located in the hills behind the Malecon boardwalk, this quiet area features traditional Vallarta-style homes with red-tiled roofs, balconies adorned with colorful bougainvillea, narrow cobblestone streets, and spectacular views of the bay.

The area gained notoriety in the 1960s when it was home to Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during and after the filming of the movie The Night of the Iguana.

The neighborhood's reputation has been associated with the destination's glamorous history since then, and it is now home to some of the most renowned boutique hotels in Puerto Vallarta.

Wandering through the alleys of Gringo Gulch is like traveling back to an older, quieter Puerto Vallarta, where you can experience the charm of a simpler time.

Discover Mismaloya's Brand New Boardwalk

Mismaloya, a small fishing village known for its beach and for having played host to several film productions, including John Huston's The Night of the Iguana, lies just 15 minutes south of the Romantic Zone along Highway 200.

The small boardwalk in Mismaloya, recently renovated, is a source of pride for the residents. Visitors can stroll along the water's edge, board a panga boat to the hidden beaches south of Puerto Vallarta, observe the town's daily life, and enjoy views of of Banderas Bay surrounded by jungle.

If you're looking for a more relaxed and authentic experience, Mismaloya's boardwalk is the place to be. It's less crowded than Puerto Vallarta's main El Malecon boardwalk.

Visit the Los Muertos Pier at Night

The Los Muertos Pier, situated in the Romantic Zone, stands as one of Puerto Vallarta's most iconic landmarks.

During the day, it is used as a departure point for water taxis and some of the most fun tours to nearby beaches. But it's at night when the pier takes on a special atmosphere.

The modern design is illuminated by color-changing lights, creating a visual effect that reflects off the bay's water. Many visitors come simply to enjoy the sea breeze, take photos, and stroll along the pier.

End your day of exploring Puerto Vallarta in the perfect way—without spending a dime.
