AMERICAN AIRLINES AND SOUTHWEST AIRLINES ANNOUNCE NEW SERVICE TO PVR

As Puerto Vallarta prepares for what is set to be a record high season for the Mexican Pacific coast destination, new flights continue to be announced.

American Airlines will operate a new daily direct flight from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the Lic. Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) starting December 15.

Southwest Airlines will also start a new flight from LAX to PVR starting December 4. The new flights will be increasing the airlift between Puerto Vallarta and what is already the destination’s top destination of origin for tourists from the United States.

Late last month, Southwest Airlines received U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approval to fly between Oakland International Airport and Puerto Vallarta. Also subject to Mexican governmental approval, this new service in Northern California would begin on Feb. 12, 2017. Mexican airline, Interjet, is also waiting on DOT approval on a new flight from LAX to PVR.

New flights that have been announced this year include direct flights from Chicago on Frontier Airlines, from Los Angeles on Southwest Airlines and another from Poland with Rainbow Tours tour operator aboard LOT Polish Airlines planes. Last year the Destination confirmed four new flights.

Puerto Vallarta’s Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) reported that July was its 37th month of continuous increase in new airline seats with international arrivals up 12.8% from January to July of 2016 as compared to 2015.

In May, the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board announced that airport, local and national authorities had approved an 8-million- dollar-budget to renovate the immigration and costumes areas of the airport to accommodate visitors and facilitate a rapid exit of the airport.

Tourism flight arrivals is in alignment with Puerto Vallarta’s hotel occupancy rate which is currently at an 80%; the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board reported that the first seven months of the year had a hotel occupancy rate of 72.6%, its highest level in a decade, almost 10% more than in the same period of 2015.
