Four Charming One Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

The vibrant energy of Puerto Vallarta—with its beautiful beaches, the Malecón boardwalk, and its public art gallery, as well as its lively nightlife—is undeniable.  But, a short distance away, hidden among the majestic mountains of the Sierra Madre and the lush valleys of Jalisco, lie hidden treasures from another time.

Puerto Vallarta's location gives visitors a great starting point for exploring towns with rich histories, cultures, and landscapes unlike any other.  The Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) of Jalisco are the perfect place for travelers looking to experience the authentic Mexico.  They are the ideal spot for those seeking to connect with history, culture, and breathtaking mountain landscapes.

So, prepare your camera and sense of adventure because we have a selection of four captivating destinations to nearby Pueblos Mágicos that will enhance your journey to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, whether it's just for a day or an entire weekend.

A Cup of Joe in the Mountains

The journey to San Sebastián del Oeste is just over an hour and a half from Puerto Vallarta.  The road is winding, and along the way, you'll see spectacular views.  This town is a window into the past, a direct transport to the 18th and 19th centuries when mining was the main industry.

The mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental host San Sebastián del Oeste, a Pueblo Mágico that seems frozen in time.  The cobblestone streets, adobe houses, and red roofs bear witness to the mining era that once brought it to life.

What to Do in San Sebastián del Oeste?

  • Explore the historic center.  Take a leisurely stroll through the village, passing the red-roofed houses that line its cobblestone streets.  The parish church of San Sebastián Mártir is the undisputed star of the main square, a place of worship that stands as a testament to the region's rich religious heritage.  The church's interior is decorated with aquamarine-colored stone pillars and light blue and pastel pink vaults.  This location is perfect for photos.
  • Savor a cup of high-altitude coffee.  The region produces one of the best coffees in Mexico, and coffee lovers from all over the world flock to the region to try it.  A visit to a coffee farm is the perfect opportunity to try different types of coffee and learn about how they are made.  The sensory experience is not to be missed.

  • La Bufa Lookout Point.  Its elevation of over 2,400 meters above sea level provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.  On days with good visibility, it is said that you can see Banderas Bay from the top of this lookout point.  Could it be true?
  • Visit old haciendas.  An opulent past is evoked by former mining haciendas such as La Quitería.  Exploring their ruins is like imagining the stories of prosperity they once experienced, and the history they represent.

The town's atmosphere is characterized by its peacefulness and the mist that frequently shrouds it, contributing to an aura of romance and mystery.  San Sebastián del Oeste is undoubtedly the perfect getaway for a weekend break, offering visitors a chance to unwind and relax in a tranquil setting.

A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Tradition

As you make your way through the Sierra Madre, like a valley straight out of a fairy tale, Mascota comes into view.  A mere handful of hours from Puerto Vallarta, the captivating Pueblo Mágico of Mascota beckons, boasting an abundance of natural and cultural splendor. The weather is so nice that you will want to leave the phone behind and enjoy the mountains, lagoons, and countryside.

What to Do in Mascota?

  • Visit the Archaeological Museum. An impressive collection of more than 400 pre-Hispanic pieces from the region is housed in this colonial building, which is distributed across four rooms.  The museum also boasts a vast collection of photographs of rock art, offering a rich glimpse into the history of western Mexico.  Other options for visits include the Museum of Maestro Raúl Rodríguez Peña (which features the history and notable figures of Mascota) and the Raicilla Museum (which has everything you ever wanted to know about this distilled spirit.)
  • The Main Square and Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows.) This is ideal for a Sunday morning visit. Following the midday church service, take a slow walk through the nearby streets to appreciate the town's historical buildings.

  • Corrinchis Dam. Mascota has a lot to offer when it comes to outdoor activities, and this is one of our favorite places to enjoy a day outdoors.  The dam is perfect for a variety of activities, including sport fishing, kayaking, and nature photography.  The surrounding area is great for hiking.  At the foot of the dam, you'll find the El Molcajete restaurant, which boasts panoramic views of the artificial lagoon and holds the Guinness World Record for the largest molcajete (a pre-Hispanic mortar and pestle made from volcanic stone)  in the world.
  • The Raicilla Route. If you're looking to experience a blend of rural and nature tourism, traditional Mexican cuisine and culture, this is an ideal activity.  Escape a Lo Mágico, a recommended local tour operator, offers a fascinating experience that includes visits to artisan taverns such as that of master raicillero Mr. Benito Salcedo and his Raicilla Del Ciervo label.

Mascota embodies the essence of authenticity.  A Pueblo Mágico near Puerto Vallarta where you can stroll leisurely, enjoy its well-preserved architecture, and feel the slow pulse of country life.

Tradition, Heritage, and Faith

Talpa de Allende is a pilgrimage center known for housing the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is one of the most visited temples in Mexico.  However, its appeal extends beyond religious significance.

What to Do in Talpa de Allende?

  • Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Regardless of your creed, you are sure to be awestruck by this imposing basilica. The displays of faith by visitors create a moving and unique atmosphere that is both memorable and unforgettable.
  • The main square. Take the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the historic center, a place that abounds in craft shops, traditional sweets, and filigree jewelry.

  • Taste the traditional sweets. The streets surrounding the sanctuary smell heavenly, and the scent fills the air with a sense of serenity and calm.  Street vendors offer a variety of delicious and colorful treats, including milk sweets, guava paste, alegrías, and more.  You should also try the region's emblematic products: cajeta and guava rolls.
  • Take a trip to the maple forest. This Protected Natural Area is home to a wide variety of plant species, including oaks, firs, pines, and tree ferns.  This enchanting forest, just an hour from Talpa, is home to a variety of animals, including jaguars, pumas, white-tailed deer, and green macaws.

Talpa de Allende is synonymous with devotion.  This magical town in the Sierra Madre Occidental is an immersion in the most deeply rooted traditions of Jalisco, where visitors can experience the state's rich cultural and religious heritage.  The experience is unforgettable, full of color, flavors, and fervor.

Postcards From the Heart of Jalisco

Tequila is a must-visit Magical Town near Puerto Vallarta.  The new highway between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta will get you there even faster, easier, and safer.  The road trip from the beach to Tequila will take about three hours, but it's worth every minute.

A visit to Tequila means becoming part of the history of one of Mexico's most emblematic drinks.  This Pueblo Mágico, surrounded by blue agave fields (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), combines history, traditional cuisine, and unique experiences.

What to Do in Tequila?

  • Go on a tour of a tequila hacienda. Engage in the time-honored practice of distillation, drawing on your ancestral roots.  World-renowned brands like José Cuervo and Sauza offer tours that include activities such as agave cutting and tasting.
  • Take a stroll through the agave fields. The agave landscape, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, resembles a blue-green sea of leaves that stretches to the horizon.  This is an ideal addition to one's Instagram feed.

  • Feel the vibe of the main square. The historic center, with its vibrant facades, the kiosk, the parish church, and the unmistakable scent of tequila in the air, collectively create an atmosphere that is both celebratory and distinctive.
  • The National Tequila Museum (MUNAT) is the place to go if you want to learn about the history and production process of this drink.

The Magical Town of Tequila offers a complete cultural experience that delights all the senses. It is a celebration of an identity that goes beyond the borders of Jalisco and Mexico.
