PUERTO VALLARTA TO BE SECONDARY VENUE FOR THE 5TH WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2017

On November 3 work and preparations began for the 5th World Aquatics Championships 2017, which will be held in the cities of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.

The city of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco was chosen as co-host (secondary venue) for the World Aquatics Championships 2017, while the city unanimously chosen to be the host was the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. This was announced by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

The destinations were carefully chosen after analyzing their level of excellence in service in accommodations, transportation, advertising and facilities, for the convenience of the Championship participants.

Around 200 countries will participate in the event in disciplines such as Springboard and Platform Diving, Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming, Open Water Swimming, High Diving, etc. The most important swimming event in the world will be broadcast to more than 3.5 billion viewers worldwide.

It is noteworthy that this event is in the "Top 5" globally, after the Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cups.

Jesus Mena Campos, General Manager of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), said the economic spill-over into Jalisco could be 120 to 140 million dollars, while the investment should range between 60 and 70 million dollars, including the private sector’s involvement. It is estimated that the World Aquatics Championships will attract about 150,000 visitors from around the world.

This type of sporting events are a unique opportunity for Mexico, considering not only the promotion and development of sports in the country, but also the growth of sports tourism, since the country has all the facilities necessary for events of such international stature.
