KNOW PUERTO VALLARTA A TRADITIONAL PORT IN JALISCO, MEXICO

Puerto Vallarta is the second most important economic area of the state of Jalisco and the third largest port in Mexico. Today it’s one of the most visited tourist destinations in our country. Let’s take a brief look at the history of our harbor, shall we?

It is said that Captain Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura was the conqueror of this region. The chronicles tell that the town was founded on December 12, 1851 by Sr. Guadalupe Sanchez, who initially called it "Las Peñas de Santa Maria de Guadalupe". Over time, the name was shortened to "Puerto Las Peñas". The port was created due to the need to transport gold and silver from nearby mines at both Mascota and San Sebastian del Oeste.

During the 50''s, Vallarta began to seduce intellectuals, artists and politicians. By 1962, the American director John Huston came to this fishing port along with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor. The movie "The Night of the Iguana" began filming in 1963.

Fortunately, over the decades, Vallarta has managed to preserve most of its charm, colonial houses with wrougt iron gates, located on beautiful cobblestone streets that are built with red bricks which are then whitewashed and with red tile roofs.

The area surrounding the city is very diverse. On the one hand, there are mountains with lush tropical vegetation and on the other, the spectacular Banderas Bay which is the privileged home of dolphins, manta rays, colorful fish and whales, as well  as turtles in some seasons.

Thanks to its privileged location on the North Coast Region of the state of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta is blessed with a wealth of things to do today. Do not miss the opportunity to visit this port known to experience a destination with history.
