There’s a place called El Salado estuary, Puerto Vallarta’s natural protected area, which is surrounded by the city, and connects to the Pacific Ocean through a channel 22 yd. wide and 1.2 mi. long. It has 415 ac. of mangroves and marshes, with sweet and salt waters that creates a friendly environment so that fish can breed and later on depart to he Bahía de Banderas.
The importance of this place rests in the climate balance that maintains the area, besides being the food producer and regulator for all species at Bahía de Banderas.
Among the animals that live here it is possible to fin 29 different amphibians and reptile species such as the garrobo, river crocodile, enormous groups of fiddler, cajo and Moray crabs, as well as 10 species of mammals such as raccoons and opossums.
It is possible to take guided tours were you’ll be able to walk through a pier surrounded by mangroves, watch native species of birds, and take a boat ride through the estuary’s channel.
This natural reserve is located at Medina Asencio, Plaza Iguana, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. It is open Tuedays to Fridays with tours departing at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 hrs. On Saturdays tours depart at 9:00, 11:00 and 13:00 hrs.
