Puerto Vallarta is the ideal destination for a summer family vacation. With 360 days of sunshine a year, our beaches are perfect for swimming and—unlike many other beach destinations—completely free of sargassum (seaweed.)

We’ve handpicked four beaches that are great for families, offering calm waters, stunning jungle and mountain backdrops, and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained from morning until late afternoon.

Below is our guide to four must-visit beaches for this summer, plus the icing on the cake: a water park in Vallarta that will top off any family itinerary and guarantee hours of fun in the sun.

Located in Puerto Vallarta's South Zone, Playa Esmeralda Beach offers clear, calm waters that are ideal for younger children who aren't quite ready for the open ocean. The area maintains a quiet, residential feel—away from the crowds—while still being just minutes from El Centro and the Romantic Zone. Esmeralda Beach is the perfect spot for kids to build sandcastles on the soft shore while adults snorkel to explore the nearby marine life.

Thanks to a natural rock barrier, the waves at Garza Blanca Beach are gentle, making it one of the best spots in Puerto Vallarta for swimming with kids. If you’re staying nearby, the prestigious resort at the foot of the beach features a Kids Club for ages 4 to 12. Their activities include arts and crafts, games, and poolside entertainment—giving parents a chance to relax. At the beach, families can try paddleboarding in the calm waters or kayaking toward the nearby Los Arcos de Mismaloya marine park.

At just 30 meters long, Colomitos is considered Mexico’s smallest beach. Its turquoise waters and protected cove create a peaceful environment that’s perfect for families arriving by water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán—the easiest route if you’re traveling with kids or older adults. If you prefer to hike there, keep in mind that the 1.2-mile jungle trail can be challenging for younger children (they may need help climbing rocks and supervision along the narrow paths.) Be sure to bring cash and snacks, as shopping options on the beach are very limited.

For families who want easy access to services, Playa de Oro Beach offers the perfect mix of comfort and convenience. It’s located just a short distance from a variety of restaurants, shopping centers, and hotels. The water is usually calm, and the beach holds a national "White Flag" certification, recognizing its cleanliness, safety, and environmental quality. This makes Playa de Oro Beach a reliable choice for families who want to spend the day without straying far from the tourist heart of the Hotel Zone.

No family trip to Puerto Vallarta is complete without a stop at Aquaventuras Park, located just 15 minutes north of the international airport. The park features ten spectacular slides of varying intensity levels, a 160-meter Lazy River for a relaxing float, and a dedicated splash area designed specifically for the youngest visitors. You can round out your day by swimming with dolphins or interacting with sea lions at the on-site Dolphin Discovery habitat. The park is open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, which is plenty of time to enjoy every attraction at a leisurely pace.

Puerto Vallarta has all the ingredients for an unforgettable family summer vacation. Each beach—and the water park—offers a unique vibe, so we recommend planning your itinerary based on the age of your children and the type of adventure your family is looking for this summer in Jalisco’s premier beach destination.
