The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board announced that the destination has continued its increase in visitor arrivals, which has been taking place year after year since 2008 when international travel decreased in most international destinations as a result of the economic crisis.
Puerto Vallarta offers visitors a large range of hospitality options, including, villas, condominiums, private homes, boutique hotels, and resorts. A total of 22,500 rooms with 12,800 rooms in properties that are members of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel Association which reports on hotel occupancy. Of those 12,800, it has been reported that the first five months of 2016 Puerto Vallarta has seen a hotel occupancy rate of 74.5%, its highest level in a decade, 1.5% more than in the same period of 2015 and 4.5% from 2014.
Similarly, the Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) saw 1,948,000 passenger arrivals (11% more than 2015) in addition, 164,933 passengers visited the destination while on cruise calls to the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port.
2015 was a record year for Puerto Vallarta with an occupancy rate of a 66.9% hotel occupancy rate reported by the Hotel Association and the destination to surpass that percentage in 2016.
According to the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, the continued increase is due to a consistent and proactive promotions campaign which has target not only its primary markets such as Mexico, the US and Canada but emerging destinations such as South America and Europe. In addition, the board has maintained a proactive public relations campaign focused on promoting the destination in different niche markets.
