Puerto Vallarta: Great Experiences to Discover on the First Long Weekend of 2026

The first extended weekend of 2026 is almost here, and Puerto Vallarta is gearing up to greet visitors with an alluring blend of sunshine, ocean, and distinctive adventures.

Jalisco's premier destination is known for its spectacular beaches and vibrant culinary scene.  But it also offers new experiences for all tastes and faster ways to get there by road so you can make the most of every moment of the February 5th long weekend, Mexican Constitution Day.

This comprehensive and pragmatic guide will help you make the most of this extended weekend in one of Mexico's most captivating destinations.

Must-See Beaches on the Mexican Pacific Coast

Playa de Oro Beach: Certified and Family-Friendly

Playa de Oro beach boasts the prestigious domestic Bandera Blanca (White Flag) certification, a seal of cleanliness and quality that sets it apart.  Whether you're traveling with kids or seeking a serene retreat without venturing too far from the North Hotel Zone, Playa de Oro beach is an excellent choice.

Camarones Beach: A Local and Youthful Vibe

Those who enjoy a more youthful and urban atmosphere will find Camarones beach, which is very close to Puerto Vallarta's Malecón boardwalk, to be perfect for them.  The 5 de Diciembre (5D) neighborhood offers a wide variety of dining and drinking options, as well as water activities at the beach.

Las Gemelas: A Twin Gem with Turquoise Waters

The two coves of Las Gemelas beach, small, quiet, and surrounded by vegetation, are ideal for swimming and relaxing.  Travel + Leisure Mexico, a renowned travel and lifestyle magazine, has given its stamp of approval for this destination, citing its intimate atmosphere and natural beauty as major selling points.

Yelapa: Where Time Stands Still

Access is exclusively available by boat from Boca de Tomatlán or from the maritime terminal, with the recently introduced Vallarta Ferry offering a seamless and comfortable journey.  No matter what option you choose, we can assure you that the trip will be worthwhile.  Yelapa, a quaint fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta, will win you over with its peaceful beach, authentic cuisine, and laid-back atmosphere.

Adventures Between the Sea and the Mountains

Whale Watching: An Unparalleled Natural Wonder

From December to March, humpback whales can be seen along the shores of Banderas Bay.  Watching their majestic dance in the ocean is a breathtaking experience.  Reliable local tour operators, including Vallarta Adventures and Ecotours Vallarta, provide eco-friendly whale-watching tours in Puerto Vallarta.

Jorullo Point: An Invigorating Experience with Breathtaking Views

Located in the Sierra Madre mountains, this viewpoint is suspended high above the ground.  From here, you can see breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains, the Cuale River, and, in the distance, the vast blue Pacific Ocean.  Ideal for those seeking a touch of adventure without straying too far from the Romantic Zone.  Pay a visit and find out why River Park Puerto Vallarta is in the running for the Best Sustainable Tourism Initiative in Mexico award in the 2026 Food and Travel Reader Awards

Marigalante II: Sailing on a Modern Pirate Ship

It is one of the new attractions in the destination and is already set to become a favorite among visitors: El Marigalante II is a replica of a 17th-century Spanish galleon.  Pirate ship tours in Puerto Vallarta offer a variety of entertainment, including day and night shows, fireworks, and a themed buffet on board.  El Marigalante II is the perfect choice for families traveling with children and couples seeking simple entertainment.

Flavors of Vallarta: From the Market to Gourmet Dining

Local Markets: The Heart and Soul of Tradition

A visit to the Cuale Municipal Market is an essential part of any trip, offering the chance to sample delicious antojitos mexicanos, fresh fruits, and unique local crafts.  The upper floor of the market is home to a variety of fondas (small, family-owned restaurants) specializing in traditional Mexican cuisine, including pozole, fresh ceviche, and comida corrida (menu of the day at a fixed price) among other dishes.  Those seeking the authentic flavor of Jalisco will find comfort food and very affordable prices.

Premier Gastronomic Journey by Paco Ruano

The new dining experience in Puerto Vallarta that everyone is talking about is an exciting addition to the city's culinary scene.  Vallarta Adventures is proud to introduce Premier Gastronomic Journey—one of its most exclusive tours, inspired by the renowned Guadalajara chef Paco Ruano.  The most discerning travelers are catered to with haute cuisine, an international-quality entertainment show, and panoramic sunset views on a sea tour.

Olas Altas Farmers Market: The Handmade Touch

Every Saturday, starting at 9:00 am, the esplanade of Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Romantic Zone becomes a vibrant hub for local producers, chefs, and artists, creating a bohemian, festive, and relaxed atmosphere.  There's no better way to start a weekend in Puerto Vallarta than with a visit to the Olas Altas Farmers Market, where you'll experience the warmth of the sun filtering through the trees and the soothing sound of the sea in the background.  It's perfect for brunch and shopping with a local flavor.

Vallarta is More Accessible Than Ever Before

The new toll highway between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta is set to completely change the way you get there.  It was recently inaugurated and has reduced travel time from over five hours to around two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic.

About the New Guadalajara-Vallarta Highway

  • The modern and safe highway runs between the mountains and the coast, offering spectacular scenery along the way.
  • Easy access to Compostela, Las Varas, and Bahía de Banderas.
  • Tourist stops and rest areas with services are available.

Toll Booths

Until January 2026, the Guadalajara to Vallarta highway includes five main toll booths. It is recommended that travelers check the updated rates on the CAPUFE website (in Spanish) before traveling because costs may vary depending on the type of vehicle and section.

The following is a list of the current prices in Mexican Pesos (MXN) for a light vehicle:

  • El Arenal: 205 MXN.
  • Plan de Barrancas: 306 MXN.
  • Amado Nervo: 205 MXN.
  • La Peñita: 181 MXN.
  • Tramo final (Aeropuerto): 483 MXN
    • Total: 1,380 MXN.

Why Opt for the New Puerto Vallarta Highway?

The new Guadalajara–Puerto Vallarta highway is the best option for those traveling with family or looking for a quick getaway during the long weekend.  It offers greater safety and comfort, in addition to shortening travel time.

Why Choose Vallarta for the First Long Weekend of 2026

The February 5th long weekend is the perfect time for you and your family to enjoy Puerto Vallarta as your getaway destination.  Jalisco’s premier beach destination has a variety of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy, beautiful beaches perfect for swimming, and delicious culinary experiences

The new Guadalajara–Puerto Vallarta Highway makes it easier, quicker, and safer to reach the always sunny Vallarta shores from the capital of Jalisco and the surrounding areas.

The first extended weekend of 2026 presents the ideal chance to reconnect with the sea, nature, and Mexican cuisine.  Whether you're traveling by road thanks to the new highway or arriving by plane, Puerto Vallarta awaits with endless experiences that combine relaxation, adventure, and international flavors.
