On the afternoon of May 31st, the commemoration of the double anniversary of Puerto Vallarta will be celebrated, as is the tradition, with a town hall plenary meeting at Los Arcos del Malecon amphitheater.
Afterwards, a large birthday cake is offered to the attendees at the Malecon by the City authorities, headed by the Mayor of Puerto Vallarta.
The grand celebration of Puerto Vallarta's double anniversary will end with a free live performance by a surprise artist at the Malecon Lighthouse Esplanade.
Popular live acts such as Alfredo Olivas, Los Ángeles Azules, Celso Piña, La Sonora Dinamita, Pepe Aguilar, among others, have headlined Puerto Vallarta's double anniversary celebrations in recent years, delighting thousands of locals and visitors.
Founded on December 12, 1851 by Don Guadalupe Sanchez Torres, Puerto Vallarta has grown from a small fishing village -formerly known as Las Peñas de Santa Maria de Guadalupe- to an internationally renowned tourist destination.
The Congress of the State of Jalisco granted the small town of Las Peñas the status of a municipality on May 31, 1918. When the political category was changed, Las Peñas received the name of the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta. This was in honor of the illustrious governor of the State of Jalisco, Ignacio Luis Vallarta Ogazón.
Decades later, on May 31, 1968, the City of Puerto Vallarta was elevated to the category of City by the Congress of the State of Jalisco, celebrating its 50th anniversary as a municipality.
Thus, this double anniversary is the ideal time for celebration, but also for reflection on the development of Puerto Vallarta and its evolution into a vibrant and prosperous community.
This date of special significance also offers the opportunity to pause, go back in time and learn more about the local history through photo exhibits, lectures and other cultural events that showcase the city's heritage.
Puerto Vallarta's past, present and future are on display during the celebration of its 106th anniversary as a municipality and 56th anniversary as a city. The double anniversary of Puerto Vallarta is a special occasion to pay tribute to our people, our culture and the natural beauty that make our destination so unique and so popular.
